March 14, 2008, Newsletter Issue #106: Preparing a flare for installation?
1
Tip of the Week
Before you can put the mounting tape on the underside of the flare, you have to clean it with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), then rough up the area with sandpaper. After that, clean it again with MEK. Next, apply the adhesion promoter to the surfaces where you are going to apply tape. Now you are ready to apply the double-sided mounting tape. When you applying the tape, leave some of the tape hanging off at each end to use as a pull-tab later. Use the MEK again to clean the area of the body where you will attach the flare. Take care not to erase your grease-pencil outline. Hold the flare in place, pull the tape backing away and press the part firmly onto the body. Using self-tapping screws, secure the part beneath the edge of the wheel well. Do not over tighten the screws or you will split the part.
