April 14, 2006, Newsletter Issue #11: Safe winching

Tip of the Week

When it comes to safe winching you don’t so much need safety equipment as a safety mentality. Your two most useful tools are leather work gloves and a good head on your shoulders. The biggest no-no when using a winch is handling the cable with your bare hands. A frayed cable can cut you to the bone. According to winch manufacturer Warn Winch, the most common winch accident involves fingers caught in the cable as it winds onto the drum. So, to prevent a pinch (or worse) when you winch, always use the remote control cable, and make sure nobody is anywhere near the cable.
