How do I prepare the flare for installation? l

Preparing a flare for installation?

Before you can put the mounting tape on the underside of the flare, you have to clean it with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), then rough up the area with sandpaper. After that, clean it again with MEK. Next, apply the adhesion promoter to the surfaces where you are going to apply tape. Now you are ready to apply the double-sided mounting tape. When you applying the tape, leave some of the tape hanging off at each end to use as a pull-tab later. Use the MEK again to clean the area of the body where you will attach the flare. Take care not to erase your grease-pencil outline. Hold the flare in place, pull the tape backing away and press the part firmly onto the body. Using self-tapping screws, secure the part beneath the edge of the wheel well. Do not over tighten the screws or you will split the part.

How do I install fender flares on my pickup?

Installing fender flares

If you feel up to it, and you have about 3 hours to kill, you could deck out your pick-up with new fender flares on a Saturday morning. Just follow instructions, go easy on the brewskis, and you'll git er done easy. Start with the rear fender flare first. It comes in two pieces. You attach one part to the rear fender, and the other to the rear of the door panel. But hold on. You can't just whip out your ratchet and start installing. Before you start, you are going to need to remove, take off, and otherwise disassemble any factory parts that could interfere with the installation. This includes, but is not limited to the following: wheels, tires, the plastic plate at the bottom of the wheel-well, body side molding, fender trim, mud flaps, etc. Once you get the wheel and body trim off, you are ready to test fit the rear portion of the flare that attaches to the fender. Position it precisely where it is to be mounted. Using a grease pencil, make an outline of the part.

How do I install the forward portion of a fender flare?

Installing the forward section of a flare

The forward portion of a flare attaches to the door and installs essentially the same way as the rear portion, with one important exception. You test fit the part, outline it with a grease pencil, prepare the surface and attach the part using double-sided tape. So far, so good.

But when you get to the actual mounting of the part, you will have to drill and attach screws into the metal surface of the door. To mark the location of the screws, apply colored modeling clay on the predrilled screw holes on the bottom of the part.

* Position the part properly and press down firmly.
* You can now see where on the door you have to pre-drill your holes.
* Go ahead and pre-drill the screw holes in the door using the markings as guides.
* Using self-tapping screws secure the part in place; then remove the tape backing.

Now you are ready to install the front fender flare on the forward wheel well. The front flare attaches just like rear one. Do the same on the other side and you are fully flared and raring to go.

Caring For Your Fender Flares

Most fender flares are made of a plastic or polymer material and can get extremely dirty and or banged up. Caring for your aftermarket fender flares can be simple and easy. When cleaning the fender flares, always remember to use a good cleaner; diluted degreasers seem to work the best. Never use a steel wool or anything that may scuff the surface of the fender flare. After cleaning the fender flares, protect them with a silicone dressing, but make sure you wipe the excess dressing from the paint and clean the paint. Silicone dressings will damage clear coats and painted surfaces. After wiping off the excess dressing, wait 20-30 minutes and apply another coat of silicone dressing. The silicone dressing, or protectant, will act as barrier between the fender flare and the dirt, keeping the surface of the fender flare slick and at the same time allowing the dirt to slide off easier.
